Pescadero: Then and Now

Pescadero has a rich history characterized by a blend of indigenous heritage, colonial influences, and modern development.

Originally inhabited by indigenous tribes such as the Pericúes and the Guaycuras, the area surrounding El Pescadero was sparsely populated and primarily utilized for hunting, fishing, and agriculture. These early inhabitants thrived in harmony with the rugged coastal landscape, drawing sustenance from the bountiful sea and fertile land.

The arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century marked a significant turning point in the region's history. Spanish colonization brought with it a wave of cultural and socioeconomic changes, as missionaries established missions and settlements along the Baja California Peninsula. While this took its toll on the indigenous populations, their cultural legacy has left an indelible imprint on the fabric of El Pescadero's identity.

Today El Pescadero has well-established residential areas, especially in south Cerritos. The central area of Cerritos proper is a developed tourist area, and there is still a mix of agricultural land and neighborhoods all surrounded by the natural beauty of Baja.

El Pescadero's neighborhoods offer an array of amenities and features designed to enhance residents' quality of life. Many communities have well-manicured parks, pedestrian-friendly streets, and communal gathering spaces where neighbors can come together to socialize and connect. Additionally, residents enjoy access to private beach clubs, swimming pools, and fitness centers, providing opportunities for recreation and relaxation just steps from their front door.

There are several distinct villages and neighborhoods, each with its own appeal:

  • South Cerritos is a residential area in Pescadero. As such you won’t find as much tourism here or the commercial activity that you would in other parts of Pescadero. You will find many more single-family homes in neighborhoods that exude a more laid-back lifestyle.
  • Cerritos proper is the vibrant heart of Pescadero. This bustling neighborhood is home to colorful street markets, family-owned businesses, and traditional eateries serving up delicious local cuisine. El Pescadero Centro also is where you’ll find much busier stretches of beach taking advantage of tourist-friendly amenities. Though there are single-family properties here, you’ll also find condominiums for those who prefer to be closer to the wealth of amenities that the area offers.
  • El Gavilán is tucked away in the hills overlooking Pescadero and offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of central Cerritos. The area has stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, with lush orchards, vineyards, and organic farms dotting the landscape. Here you can explore scenic hiking trails, sample artisanal wines, and savor the tranquility of rural life.
  • San Pedrito is further north of Gavilan, but like Gavilan is lush and green. San Pedrito is a tranquil beachfront community known for its secluded beaches and world-class surfing conditions. This laid-back neighborhood attracts surfers and beach lovers seeking a quieter, more remote retreat than that offered by Cerritos. San Pedrito offers a range of accommodation options, from rustic beachfront cabanas to upscale vacation rentals, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Baja California Peninsula.

Shopping and Dining

Despite its small size, Pescadero has a variety of shopping and dining options and while many of the more upmarket options are in central Cerritos, you’ll find some great options in the other neighborhoods too. However, because of its size, you’ll be able to go anywhere you want, say from a quieter neighborhood in Gavilán to the options in central Cerritos within just a few minutes.

When it comes to dining, Pescadero's culinary scene shines with a diverse array of eateries serving up traditional Mexican fare, international cuisine, and farm-to-table delicacies.

A couple of restaurants we’d recommend are Hierbabuena and El Coyote in El Perdido. The first is a wonderful farm-to-table establishment with a focus on providing dishes made from ingredients from their own garden. It really doesn’t get any fresher. El Coyote is an experience that will stimulate all the senses. The setting is unique, something the establishment itself describes as “barefoot comfort and fine dining”.

The Beach and Beyond

We can’t talk about El Pescadero without exploring the beach life. Cerritos Beach (Playa Los Cerritos) may have a monopoly when it comes to visitors looking for some of the best surfing in the area along with all the comforts and amenities the beach offers. However, it is by no means the only beach here worth visiting. Head north to Playa San Pedrito and you can have a less crowded and less commercial beach experience. You won’t necessarily have all the amenities on hand that Cerritos Beach provides but that in itself may be the charm. Here you can make camp and experience a truly wild and natural beach experience.

Beyond the beach, there is more to enjoy. El Pescadero is known for its agriculture so you’d expect it would have an excellent Farmers Market, it does. From locally grown fresh produce, artisanal food, and arts and crafts, there’s a lot that will catch the eye.

For something a little more upbeat there’s the Bajaja Music Festival, a recent event that is gaining popularity and will likely become an annual event. Though it does technically take place on the beach, the three-day event is not only about dancing and fun, there are many other activities. All this is done to raise awareness and financial support for first responders in the area.

Rancho Pescadero is one of the most beautiful resorts in the region. Here luxury merges with nature and everything has been designed to give a sense of joy to living. Even as a resident the spa, restaurants, and beautiful accommodations make Rancho Pescadero well worth a stay.
