Fiestas Patronales

This time of the year, just days before the Easter holidays, Los Cabos holds one of the most significant traditions that represents the natives and foreigners, with a joyful celebration that commemorates the founding of the municipality San José del Cabo and the Patron Saint Joseph (San José). The mission of San José del Cabo Añuití was built and dedicated to Saint Joseph in the year 1730.

During these festivities starting March 16th, you can expect seven days of vibrant atmosphere filled with traditional music with artists of great status, colorful decorations, and delicious food throughout the city; The celebrations start with religious ceremonies, including processions and masses held in honor of Saint Joseph. There are cultural events such as folkloric dances showcasing the region heritage, along with live music performances featuring local and national musicians. This year, the pop group “Jesse & Joy” from Mexico City and “Mi Banda El Mexicano” from Mazatlán, Sinaloa are the highlights of the music scene. Food stalls offering traditional Mexican dishes and local delicacies are also a highlight, providing an opportunity to sample food from the local amazing chefs. The “Sashimi Fest” that has become one of the most popular gastronomic events in Baja California Sur. In addition to having a town fair with many popular activities for all the families, such as carnival rides, games, farm animals’ exhibition and horseback rides.

Another of the spectacular activities that take place every year, is the coronation of the Queen of the traditional festivities and the floral games, symbolizing the beauty and elegance of language and poetry with a parade of allegorical floats.

With the passage of time, as the population has increased, these festivities have also become bigger, so you may uber or drive before or after the rush hours to secure a good spot close to downtown. Nevertheless, these festivities are a time for both locals and visitors to come together and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of San Jose del Cabo which is something I love about living here.
